چکیده

A graph G has tree-width at most w if it admits a tree-decomposition of width ≤ w. It is known that once we have a tree-decomposition of a graph G of bounded width, many NP -hard problems can be solved for G in linear time. For w ≤ 3 we give a lineartime algorithm for finding such a decomposition and for a general fixed w we obtain a probabilistic algorithm with execution time O(n log n+ n logn| log p|), which for a graph G on n vertices and a real number p > 0 either finds a tree-decomposition of width ≤ 6w or answers that the tree-width of G is ≥ w; this second answer may be wrong but with probability at most p. The second result is based on a separator technique which may be of independent interest.

Bounded Treewidth Graphs – A Survey German Russian Winter School St. Petersburg, Russia

This survey gives an introduction to the class of bounded treewidth graphs, for which many NP-complete problems can be solved efficiently. The concept of a tree decomposition is explained. Subclasses of the bounded treewidth graphs are identified. Results about finding tree decompositions are summarized. Some problems which are efficiently solvable on bounded treewidth graphs are listed and alg...

Size-Constrained Tree Decompositions

Tree-Decompositions are the corner-stone of many dynamic programming algorithms for solving graph problems. Since the complexity of such algorithms generally depends exponentially on the width (size of the bags) of the decomposition, much work has been devoted to compute tree-decompositions with small width. However, practical algorithms computing tree-decompositions only exist for graphs with ...

Tree Decomposition: A Feasibility Study

Graphs of small treewidth resemble a tree in a certain (precise) sense. Many computationally hard graph problems can be solved efficiently on graphs of small treewidth using a “tree decomposition,” which represents the constructive aspect of treewidth. However, computing minimum-width tree decompositions is NP-hard in general, but for fixed treewidth, there exist algorithms with polynomial runn...

Canonical tree-decompositions of finite graphs I. Existence and algorithms

We construct tree-decompositions of graphs that distinguish all their k-blocks and tangles of order k, for any fixed integer k. We describe a family of algorithms to construct such decompositions, seeking to maximize their diversity subject to the requirement that they commute with graph isomorphisms. In particular, all the decompositions constructed are invariant under the automorphisms of the...

Plane Decompositions as Tools for Approximation

Tree decompositions were developed by Robertson and Seymour [21]. Since then algorithms have been developed to solve intractable problems efficiently for graphs of bounded treewidth. In this paper we extend tree decompositions to allow cycles to exist in the decomposition graph; we call these new decompositions plane decompositions because we require that the decomposition graph be planar.
